Rare example of Agnes Giberne's beautifully-illustrated 19th century guide to astronomy
This is the first scientific publication by Agnes Giberne (1845-1939), known for her popular science writing, childrens' stories and historical fiction.
"Sun, Moon and Stars" sold over 10,000 copies in its first five years, and a second edition was released in 1903.
This is a rare early example, published in 1888.
The book is beautifully written to meet the scientific standards of the day, but clear enough for a general audience. It is stunningly illustrated, with scientific and explanatory diagrams, as well as evocative colour plates showing astronomical phenomena as seen or imagined from Earthly and extra-terrestrial vantage points.
Very good condition commensurate with age. Some minor spotting and discolouration to certain pages, minor wear and tear to binding, but no significant blemishes or omissions.
