It is rare to find such a well executed example of the social realism art movement of 1960s North East England outside of an art gallery. The expressionist style, use of oil on plasterboard, and theme of the piece are all constant with the artist belonging to the Pitmen Painters, who depicted the lives of coal mining communities. The composition of the painting is excellent, and the brush strokes betray a real artistic maturity. The piece is signed ‘R.M.’ and dated to 1965. It is in its original frame.
Dimensions in frame approximately 45.5 cm x 45.5 cm
